Critical Issues in US-China Relations: Searching for Common Ground (China Town Hall 2021)
Join APSI and DUCIGS for a China Town Hall on Tuesday, October 19th at 7:00 p.m. (EST). The first part of the event will consist of a virtual "watch party" for a keynote address from the National Committee on US-China Relations featuring renowned author, journalist and political commentator, Fareed Zakaria, for a discussion of how the U.S.-China relationship affects our cities, towns, and communities. From supply chains to national security, new technologies to climate change, the future of both countries will be determined by their relations with one another and the global community.

Japan's 2050 Net Zero Greenhouse Emissions Pledge
Earlier this month, the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released its latest report outlining its findings on the human impact on the world's climate. The results were not promising. Global temperatures have continued to rise and with it, the world has been witnessing more extreme weather patterns as climate systems are altered. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called the report "a code red for humanity." Already, over half of the world's countries are participating in the Net Zero Coalition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Role of Environmental Justice in International Trade and Diplomacy
Jackson Ewing, Senior Fellow, will speak at "The Role of Environmental Justice in International Trade and Diplomacy," part of the virtual event series Beyond Talking Points: Policy Solutions for Environmental Justice. The event will feature faculty experts from across Duke and the Aspen Institute to discuss the connection between environmental justice and a variety of other policy areas.
Virtual Policy Boot Camp: Foreign Governments and U.S. Institutions Abroad
This session will explore pathways for working with foreign governments and institutions to further positive environmental policy outcomes. Jackson Ewing, senior fellow at the Nicholas Institute, will discuss working directly with environmental ministries—with stories from Singapore and China. Jonathan Phillips, director of the Energy Access Project at Duke, will cover tools of U.S. economic influence abroad—focusing on development finance, foreign assistance, and export facilitation—and related priorities of the new administration.
The Business of Reaching Net-Zero Emissions in Asia
Actions from regional and international business communities are essential to meeting Asia’s nascent net-zero carbon emissions goals. With China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea all committing to carbon neutrality by mid-century, and pressure building for developing Asian countries to put forth more ambitious emissions reduction strategies, the region is entering a new era of climate change action.
How Will China Achieve Its New Climate Change Goals?
Chinese President Xi Jinping announced to the September meeting of the UN General Assembly that China would peak its carbon emissions prior to 2030 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060. This panel discussion will address how China will transition away from its fossil fuel-based economy to meet its climate goals.

The European Roundtable on Climate Change and Sustainable Transition (ERCST) and the Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions at Duke University are organising a virtual USA-EU “town hall meeting” on the role that Border Carbon Adjustments (BCAs) may play in addressing asymmetry in climate ambition under the Paris Agreement, with special focus on the plans that the European Union has to examine this option.

North American Carbon World Conference
The Nicholas Institute for Environmental Policy Solutions will present the program for the 2018 North American Carbon World (NACW) conference in San Francisco, April 4-6, in partnership with NACW organizer Climate Action Reserve. The conference will address the most pressing issues in climate policy and carbon markets to the largest gathering of climate professionals in North America.
