The Trinity River basin has been degraded by human activities for almost two hundred years, leading to a decline in available salmonid habitat and populations. The Trinity River Restoration Program (TRRP) was created in 2000 to restore salmon and steelhead populations. The project also aims to restore the river through flow management, streambank restoration, and riverbed improvement.

While all cases here exemplify applications of NBS strategies, they were gathered from various sources and not all were written using the framing of nature-based solutions. To qualify as a nature-based solution, a project must provide benefits to both people and nature. In some instances, the human benefits are present but not emphasized in the case write ups; these cases were included because they still provide useful information to learn from.

In northern Wisconsin, tribal foresters from the Menominee Nation are working to speed regeneration of more than 200,000 acres of forest areas that have been treated for invasive diseases like oak wilt. Their efforts are also creating forests that are better adapted to future conditions.
Bird Track Springs is a 2-mile reach of the Upper Grande Ronde River in eastern Oregon that has been degraded and altered by human activity. The once multi-threaded, well-connected river and floodplain became a single-threaded river with little connectivity and degraded habitat. This project aims to reconnect the river to its floodplain, increase habitat complexity, and restore salmonid populations.
Brunswick Town–Fort Anderson is an important historic site on the North Carolina coast. To prevent further erosion and negative impacts from storms and sea-level rise, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources installed 140-meters of Reefmaker along the shoreline. This stabilized the shoreline and produces multiple co-benefits.
Buffalo Slough Island in Sturgeon Lake is home to important cultural resources for the Prairie Island Indian Community (PIIC). The island was experiencing erosion and habitat loss, until the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the PIIC signed a project partnership agreement to restore the island.
Cleveland Metroparks worked closely with 12 community-based organizations and 40 stakeholder groups in restoring Lake Erie’s eastern shorefront. The team managed to conduct virtual and in-person outreach activities during the COVID-19 pandemic and develop a plan for 150 acres of park and habitat amenities, including 80 acres of newly acquired park land.
Supported by NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, the Shoalwater Bay Tribe, local government, and the North Cove community designed a “dynamic revetment” along the shoreline with rebuilt dunes and placement of cobble berms as part of the local efforts to find effective treatments for severe shoreline erosion, flooding, and sea level rise along Willapa Bay, Washington.
Terminal 117, a former industrial and superfund site along the Duwamish River, was transformed into the Duwamish River People’s Park and Shoreline Habitat. This project cleaned up a contaminated site, restored natural and stable shoreline habitat, and created river access in a historically marginalized neighborhood.
The Heritage Reach is a portion of the Santa Cruz River that runs through a highly urbanized portion of Tuscon, Arizona. This area used to support a variety of wildlife but has severely degraded from urban development. In 2019, Tuscon Water began releasing treated effluent into the Reach to restore river flows.
In 1992, Congress passed the Elwha River Ecosystem and Fisheries Restoration Act, authorizing the removal of dams to restore the Elwha River's altered ecosystem. The Elwha Dam and Glines Canyon Dam were removed in 2011, allowing water to flow freely from the Olympic Mountains to the Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The Yakima River Basin in Washington State was once home to thriving salmonid populations, that are important cultural and economic species to Tribal Nations in the basin. Salmonid populations have declined due to habitat degradation and fish passage barriers. To address these issues, the Bureau of Reclamation created the Schaake Habitat Improvement Project.
This project was initiated by BC Wildlife Services (BCWS) in 2019 to evaluate the degree to which fuel treatments have been effective in changing wildfire behavior. Two fuel treatments were studies: 1) manual treatment of older stands involving stand thinning, debris disposal + pruning, and 2) broadcast burning after timber harvesting.
The Carson National Forest (CNF) is at risk for high-intensity wildfires. Mimicking the Acequias traditional water-management system, the Cerro Negro Forest Council (CNFC) created forest mayordomos, or local managers who are a a pillar with local knowledge and heritage to serve the community within the Pueblo and Hispanic communities of northern New Mexico.
To restore forest health and an ecological and climate-adapted fire regime, staff at Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) in northern California partnered with the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and Sierra Institute in 2019 to reduce forest fuel loads within wilderness areas of the North Fork Feather River watershed.
Dams in the Penobscot River have prevented fish passage from the Gulf of Maine for centuries. To restore connectivity, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust built the largest nature-based fish bypass channel in the United States. This project will help restore Atlantic Salmon populations, and the cultural heritage of the Penobscot Nation.
Jackson Park, along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Chicago, Illinois is a historic park and valuable green space for the city. The park was overrun with invasive species and degraded from poor geomorphology. This project restored 16 hectares of habitat while preserving and rehabilitating the cultural history of Jackson Park.
Kerry Island is a part of the Lower Columbia River Estuary in Oregon, and has been severely degraded by agriculture and industrial development. The Columbia Land Trust acquired the land and removed a levee to restore tidal fluctuations. They also restored marsh habitat, improving populations of important fish species.
Shoreline erosion and habitat loss has inhibited tribal use and access to the Missouri River for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe. This project restored degraded wetland and riparian habitats along two kilometers of Lake Sharpe shoreline, and improved recreational access to the river. The Missouri River is important to the life and culture of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe.
The Mud Mountain Dam in Enumclaw, Washington was not meeting fish-passage needs. Construction on a new trap-and-haul fish passage facility began in 2018. The new design is anticipated to move 60,000 fish per day. This facility will allow endangered species such as Chinook Salmon and Bullhead and Steel Trout to travel up-river to breeding grounds.
The construction of Glen Canyon Dam in 1966 altered the hydrology of Lower Colorado River, and subsequently non-native fish species were introduced for recreational fishing. To protect the native fish population in Bright Angel Creek, biologists at Grand Canyon National Park initiated a multi-year salmonid removal effort and reintroduced native Humpback Chub to tributaries free of non-native trout.
