While all cases here exemplify applications of NBS strategies, they were gathered from various sources and not all were written using the framing of nature-based solutions. To qualify as a nature-based solution, a project must provide benefits to both people and nature. In some instances, the human benefits are present but not emphasized in the case write ups; these cases were included because they still provide useful information to learn from.

Through no-till and cover-crop practices, the soil health management system an Ohio farmer practices restore and re-carbonize soil. The no-till practices increase crop yields by 36-44%, sequesters around 960 kg of carbon per hectare per year, and reduce fertilizer and herbicide use by 75 percent.
Brooklyn Bridge Park boasts 2 kilometers of shoreline and 14 hectares of open space that serves thousands of visitors per day. This industrial shoreline has lost natural intertidal habitats and biodiversity. The park constructed two ECO-concrete projects to enhance biodiversity: concrete tide pools and repairing aging piles with eco-friendly substrate to recruit invertebrates.
Brunswick Town–Fort Anderson is an important historic site on the North Carolina coast. To prevent further erosion and negative impacts from storms and sea-level rise, the North Carolina Department of Natural and Cultural Resources installed 140-meters of Reefmaker along the shoreline. This stabilized the shoreline and produces multiple co-benefits.
Cape Lookout State Park, located in coastal Oregon, experienced extreme erosion and storm damage to its beach and infrastructure. Instead of a less aesthetic, more expensive, seawall or revetment, managers opted to build a cobble berm backed by an artificial dune to increase coastal protection and enhance the natural shoreline community.
The Cat Island Chain in Green Bay, Wisconsin was lost to erosion and storms in the 1970s. This project is rebuilding the islands using clean dredged material from a nearby navigational channel. This will create beach and wetland habitat for many species and support both sport and commercial fisheries.
The Alabama DOT considered a nature-based solution for a bridge replacement and highway realignment project across Mobile Bay, AL. The plan involved using a continuous rock revetment from the edge of the pavement down to the existing bay bottom, complemented by a nature-based solution consisting of stone breakwaters and planted marsh in front of the revetment.
County of Barnstable, Massachusetts encourages municipalities to take actions that lower flood risks, which can reduce flood insurance premiums by earning credits through the Community Rating System (CRS). In one project, 26 mosquito-control workers cleaned debris out of the 1,500 miles of ditches, pipers, and other conduits that channeled stormwater away from buildings and roads.
An engineer-ecologist team designed a living shoreline tailored to conditions on New England coastlines. After site analysis, the team used coir products (“marsh pillows”) in their living shoreline design. This winter storm-resistant approach slowed the erosion of a 30-foot bank, increased vegetation cover, and protected coastal properties.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers established a 5-hectare marsh on Drake Wilson Island off of the coast of Florida in 1976. This was one of the earliest beneficial use of dredged material projects for habitat enhancement. For more than 40 years, this marsh has created recreational opportunities and reduced erosion.
A dam placed in Dry Creek in Sonoma County, California degraded important fish habitat. Instead of building an expensive and unattractive bypass pipeline, the Dry Creek Ecosystem Restoration Project restored 30 hectares of stream, floodplain, and riparian habitat. This project increased in-stream habitat complexity and improved hydrologic connectivity with the floodplain.
To restore forest health and an ecological and climate-adapted fire regime, staff at Lassen Volcanic National Park (LAVO) in northern California partnered with the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and Sierra Institute in 2019 to reduce forest fuel loads within wilderness areas of the North Fork Feather River watershed.
The Fort Sheridan Restoration Project restored 84 hectares of ravines, riparian woodlands, coastal bluff, beach, dunes, and lacustrine habitat along the coast of Lake Michigan. This project aimed to connect coastal habitats, restore native plant communities, and increase resilience along the coast.
A partnership between the California Coastal Commission and the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is working to improve understanding of transportation critical infrastructure vulnerabilities to sea level rise and to adapt the transportation system for greater resilience to those changing conditions over the next century.
The Nature Conservancy constructed two demonstration living shorelines projects in the Fowl River in Theodore, Alabama. These living shorelines were constructed on private properties with failing bulkheads and erosion problems. This project retrofitted the existing bulkheads with tiered gabion baskets filled with native marsh plants and dredged material.
The North Carolina Coastal Federation created the state’s first living shoreline at a freshwater, high-energy site. This living shoreline replaced a failing bulkhead, and provided the state with important information on freshwater living shorelines, sources of erosion, and stormwater management practices. The project owes some of its success to being small, non-controversial, and well-designed.
Goldbug Island, off the coast of Charleston, SC, was experiencing erosion and salt marsh loss. To prevent further loss, the Nature Conservancy constructed a 67-meter-long oyster castle reef. This reef prevents erosion, mitigates wave energy, enhances biodiversity, and with increased oyster settlement, will improve water quality.
The Harbor Brook CSO 018 Constructed Wetlands Pilot Project serves the dual purposes of treating overflows from CSO 018, currently discharged into Harbor Brook, while also acting as a demonstration project to test the effectiveness of three types of constructed wetland treatment systems (floating wetland island, vertical down flow, and surface water treatment wetlands).
Dams in the Penobscot River have prevented fish passage from the Gulf of Maine for centuries. To restore connectivity, the Penobscot River Restoration Trust built the largest nature-based fish bypass channel in the United States. This project will help restore Atlantic Salmon populations, and the cultural heritage of the Penobscot Nation.
Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) has converted from spray irrigation-land application to constructed wetlands to treat municipality wastewater for Clayton County, Georgia. Constructed wetlands lower construction costs from $10 a gallon under the conventional methods to $4.73 a gallon. They also reduce land use by 75%, save energy, and reduce equipment, materials, and maintenance cost.
