Duke students, join Nicholas Institute experts Lydia Olander, Sara Mason, and Elizabeth Losos for an informal conversation about climate resilience policy in the United States and internationally.

Jonathan Phillips, director of the James E. Rogers Energy Access Project at Duke, will share insights on how climate change is impacting investment in energy systems in low- and middle-income countries and what it means for economic development. Participants will explore how climate finance is being mobilized to support climate mitigation and adaptation goals, get to know key institutional actors, and learn about ramifications for policy.

Kay Jowers, senior policy associate in the Nicholas Institute's State Policy Program, will explore avenues for working with nonprofit organizations, government agencies, and communities to support and resource progress toward environmental justice.

This session will explore pathways for working with foreign governments and institutions to further positive environmental policy outcomes. Jackson Ewing, senior fellow at the Nicholas Institute, will discuss working directly with environmental ministries—with stories from Singapore and China. Jonathan Phillips, director of the Energy Access Project at Duke, will cover tools of U.S. economic influence abroad—focusing on development finance, foreign assistance, and export facilitation—and related priorities of the new administration.

Martin Doyle, director of the Nicholas Institute’s Water Policy Program, will lead this session exploring life within the Executive from his experience at the Department of Interior, and particularly working across Bureaus and other federal agencies such as the USFWS, Corps of Engineers, USDA, and CEQ.

In this session, John Virdin, director of the Nicholas Institute's Ocean and Coastal Policy Program, will introduce participants to international institutions and discuss what they do and how they differ from each other. Institutions covered will include the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

In this session, Tim Profeta, Director of the Nicholas Institute, will take a closer look at Congress:

• What is a congressional office vs. a congressional committee?
• Do staffers really matter?
• The congressional calendar and when to engage.

Kate Konschnik and Steve Roady will have a conversation about the role of the Supreme Court in setting environmental policy for the United States. Their discussion will also touch on what might change on the Court with a new justice.
